Scholarships Awarded Despite Pandemic

When Kansas school buildings were closed in March 2020, we had to adjust the scholarship application, selection and awarding processes. With a great deal of assistance from Kris Johnson, Derby High School Student Services Secretary, we coordinated the application and selection process for 12 the scholarship funds administered by the DCF.

In early May, we presented scholarship checks totaling $70,200 to 30 Derby High School students. Check presentations were made one at a time at the DCF’s new office on Buckner while practicing physical distancing protocol. Thanks to Mark Staats, Derby Chamber of Commerce President, each scholarship recipient also received a Derby-opoly game. The Class of 2020 missed out on many “normal” senior experiences, but they didn’t miss out on the opportunity to receive financial assistance through the scholarships administered by the Derby Community Foundation.
