Apply for Local Scholarships

Members of the DHS Class of 2022 are encouraged to apply for local scholarships administered by the Derby Community Foundation. Over $100,000 in college scholarships will be awarded this spring from 16 scholarship funds.

Guidelines and application forms for all of the scholarships listed below can be found on the DCF website, www.derbycf.org, except for the Rotary Club of Derby Scholarship, which can be found on the Derby Rotary website, www.derbyrotary.org.


Application deadlines vary, but most are due the end of March.


Polk Family Scholarship—Awarded to DHS student who demonstrates the need for financial support. Amount: $7,500 per year for 4-year college (with renewals, total $30,000).

Decarsky Foundation Scholarship—The primary goal of this scholarship is to encourage students who might otherwise not consider pursuing an advanced education to do so. Amount: $4,000 per year for 4-year school (with renewals, total $16,000); $2,500 for 2-year school (with renewals and 2 years at 4-year college, total $13,000).

Steve and Leanne Caret Scholarship—The intent is to award two scholarships each year: one for a male and one for a female; renewable for 3 years.

Amount: $2,500 each (with renewals, $10,000).

Rod and Marilyn Caret Scholarship—The intent is to award two scholarships each year: one for a male and one for a female; who will attend a technical (trade) school or technical certification program at a community college. Amount: $2,500.

Diana Unkel Memorial Music Scholarship—Recipients of this scholarship must plan to make music part of their lives while in college. Amount: $2,500.

Derby High School Multifaceted Student Scholarship—Criteria for this scholarship include being a member in good standing with the DHS National Honor Society and involvement in one or more extracurricular activities. Amount: $1,000

Rotary Club of Derby Scholarship—Awarded to students who demonstrate leadership potential. Amount: $1,000

Ada Thoma and Melva Owens Memorial Scholarship—Awarded to student planning to major in education. Amount: $850

Mike Burr Memorial Scholarship—Established to encourage students with musical aptitude to attend college. Amount: $500

Ross Hearn Vocal Music Excellence Scholarship—Supports DHS graduates who wish to continue to be involved in music after graduation. Amount: $500

Re’Ana Mekaeil Memorial Scholarship—Established to provide an opportunity for Derby students to pursue their dreams. Amount: $500

Derby Wrestling Club Tom and Iris Faust Scholarship—Scholarship applicants must have participated in wrestling in Derby. Amount: $500

Pat Paske Memorial Scholarship—Awarded to a DHS senior who plans to major in education with the goal of becoming a teacher. Amount: $500

Braxton Kooser Memorial Scholarship—Awarded to DHS student who plans to attend Kansas State University and who has participated in DHS athletics. Amount: $350
