About This Scholarship

Mike was a member of the Derby High School graduating class of 2010. He loved both music and the arts. He was a member of the Marching Band, the Jazz Band, and his own band, All Falls Short. His musical achievements include:

  • The winner in two consecutive Battle of the Bands as the guitarist in All Falls Short,
  • The winner of the 2007 Guitar Idol contest held in Wichita Kansas,
  • The recipient of the 2010 Louis Armstrong Jazz Award for outstanding achievement in the
    field of Jazz awarded by Derby High School Music Department, and
  • Special recognition for outstanding musicianship at the 38th annual Wichita Jazz Festival
    It is every parent’s hope that their child grows to fill their potential. This scholarship doesn’t require a specific field of study but instead is to help the recipient reach that potential.

The Mike Burr Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a USD 260 graduating senior who participated in the Derby Senior High School music program and intends to apply the scholarship to the expenses of their first year of education after high school at an accredited post-secondary educational institution in Kansas. Selection of recipients will be made without regard to race, color, sex, religion or national origin. The student must have a high school grade point average of 3.0 or an ACT score of 21. Students who receive full scholarships to college are not eligible for this scholarship.

• Attending a post-secondary educational institution in Kansas
• High School GPA of 3.0 or an ACT score of 21

• PDF of most recent high school transcript, titled “[Your Name] Transcript”.
• PDF of a letter of recommendation from a teacher, administrator, employer, or another adult (who is not a family member) explaining why he/she feels you are qualified to receive this scholarship. Title your document “[Your Name] Recommendation”.

• March 31: Application submission deadline.
• April: Recipient will be notified via email by the end of April.
• Mid-May: Derby Community Foundation Scholarship Reception to honor the recipient.
• June 15: Recipient must sign a scholarship agreement and provide college information. Check your email! CommunityGiving will verify that you are enrolled as a full-time student at the college. (Full-time enrollment is typically 12-16 credit hours)
• June: Inform your college that you have received the scholarship.
• September 1: Full payment will arrive at your college unless otherwise notified.
